Spirometry Testing

spirometerSpirometry is a breathing test that measures lung function.  Spirometry is the most common type of pulmonary function testing.

The spirometry test is performed using a device called a spirometer, which measures the volume and speed of air that can be inhaled or exhaled.   A spirometry test is able to determine whether or not a person’s lung capacity falls within a normal demographic range.

Worker’s who could be or will be exposed to any type of airborne hazardous materials/chemicals at work, should be tested immediately after hire and annually to maintain accurate records.  This testing does not necessarily correlate with effective management of airborne hazards, as individuals respond differently to exposure.  This testing will help determine individuals who are exhibiting signs of respiratory impairment, whether occupational or non-occupational.

Airborne hazards/chemicals that can be found in the workplace to cause breathing problems or lung damage can be identified in the following forms:

  • Dust
  • Particulates
  • Fumes
  • Vapors
  • Gases
  • Smoke, etc.
